Play Safe: Protective Eyewear 101
When most athletes gear up, they think about helmets, mouth guards, padding, and cleats. Protective eyewear, interestingly, rarely makes the list. But it definitely should. Eye-related injuries account for a significant proportion of sports injuries. In fact, about 30,000 sports-related eye injuries are treated in emergency rooms yearly.
By an overwhelming majority, up to 90% of these injuries are preventable. With the right protective eyewear, most sports-related eye injuries can be avoided. Whether you’re a weekend pickleball player or a middle school basketball player, protective eyewear is a great idea. Eye injuries aren’t specific to sports, either. Many activities can pose risks. Any time you’re doing home repairs or dealing with hazardous chemicals or cleaning agents, safety eyewear is a good idea.
It’s worth understanding what protective eyewear really does and why everyday eyewear doesn’t cut it. The good news is that our optical shop has some exciting new products on the horizon to help protect your vision and your eyes as a whole. Read on to find out why protective eyewear is a smart investment for many.
Which Sports Carry the Highest Risk for Eye Injuries?
While eye injuries can happen in any activity, some are certainly riskier than others.
With an abundance of fast-moving fingers and elbows, along with close contact, basketball consistently ranks as the sport most associated with eye injury.
Baseball and softball follow basketball, largely because of the ball itself. A batted ball travels fast enough that a direct hit can cause significant eye damage. Racket sports like tennis, racquetball, squash, and pickleball are next on the list. The ball or racket can strike near the eye with very little time to react.
Young athletes tend to be more at risk than adults, as they are still developing hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and reaction speed. While adults instinctively protect themselves, school-aged athletes are less likely to have this skill fine-tuned. None of this means that you or your kids should avoid sports. It just means that eyewear deserves the same consideration as any other protective gear.
Why Regular Glasses and Sunglasses Aren’t Enough
It’s common to assume that any pair of glasses offers some protection. However, standard eyewear isn’t built for impact. Typical sunglasses and prescription glasses are great for everyday wear, but they’re not so good for absorbing the force of a ball, elbow, or racket. In some cases, a hard impact can actually shatter standard lenses. This turns them into a hazard themselves.
Safety eyewear is a different type of product altogether. It’s typically made from polycarbonate. This lightweight, highly impact-resistant material offers far more protection than plastic or glass lenses. Safety eyewear is also built differently. Frames are often wraparound in style and have padding at the nose. This padding secures them to the face and cushions direct hits.
In short, protective eyewear isn’t just sturdier than regular sunglasses or prescription glasses. It’s engineered for a specific job.
Safety Frames Aren’t Just for the Field
Sport goggles get a lot of attention for their protective qualities, which is well deserved. However, safety frames have a broader range of use cases. Anyone who does yard work, home projects, or activities where dust, debris, or impacts are likely to occur can benefit. A pair of ANSI-rated (American National Standards Institute) safety frames is a good idea to own, even if you don’t need vision correction.
Fit Matters as Much as the Frame
When it comes to protective eyewear, the fit is a major factor. Eyewear that doesn’t fit properly can shift during play or leave a gap for an impact to reach the eye. Eyewear that is uncomfortable often ends up stuffed in a locker, defeating its purpose altogether.
The right fit matters well beyond the sports field, too. Consider a few other everyday scenarios:
- Outdoor adventures: Hikers, campers, and trail runners face branches, debris, and UV exposure. Wraparound safety frames protect against scratches and flying particles while holding steady across uneven terrain.
- Medical staff: Protective eyewear helps guard against splashes and airborne particles during patient care while ensuring comfort through long shifts.
- Water sports: Whether it’s paddleboarding, kayaking, or wakeboarding, a secure, non-slip fit keeps eyewear in place even when it’s wet and protects against glare and splashes.
- Golf: A well-fitted pair shields against UV rays and flying debris off the tee or fairway, without slipping out of place mid-swing.
- Motorcycles: Riders need eyewear that stays firmly in place at high speeds while protecting against wind, dust, and debris kicked up from the road.
- Cycling: A snug, lightweight fit keeps eyewear from bouncing or fogging over long rides, while shielding eyes from wind, bugs, and road debris.
- First responders: On the job, a secure and comfortable fit means eyewear stays put during fast-moving, high-stakes situations, without becoming a distraction.
- All-day comfort: For anyone wearing protective eyewear for extended periods, proper fit prevents pinching, slipping, or fatigue, so it’s something you’ll actually keep on.
This is where having a licensed optician matters. Fitting protective eyewear isn’t as simple as picking a frame off the rack. Proper fitting accounts for face shape, the specific activity, the prescription, and how the eyewear needs to perform under movement. Our opticians walk through all of this rather than leaving patients to guess what will or won’t work for them.
